In his book Mere Apologetics Alister McGrath makes a distinction between invitation and defense. Evangelism and apologetics are related to one another, but not the same. Apology is defense, where in public or private, we explain the articles of the Christian faith and answer questions of those who are challenging or inquiring about it. Invitation is where we seek to draw someone to church who had never or seldom been there. The goal of witness is integration into the body of the church through Baptism, Confirmation, or Affirmation, all signs of an individual commitment to Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.
Apologetics may very much be part of the process of invitation. Defense may help lead to the conversion of the one with whom we speak. Invitation may involve a defense of the faith in face of opposition. While different, the two relate to one another closely.
In our apologetics we should always look for the opportunity to invite. In our invitation we must realize that we may have to defend the faith. For either or both we must be prepared to conduct ourselves with gentleness and respect.
